According to AvoidAudio’s Myspace, he/she/they/it hail(s) from the Netherlands, which leads me to believe that too many bad mushroom trips influenced this one…Not that that’s a bad thing!
With that being said, the music here is a dark score of alien deep space transmissions. Scrambled radio interference and crackle with deep bass pulses and sci-fi strings. Although the album does have plenty of beat workouts like track “OX512” or the skittery track four. “Common Exceptions,” this is definitely not club music,…not unless you were destined to dance with the damned on that haunted ship from Event Horizon. In fact, the beats sound more like some broken dubstep, glitch, or breakcore. Beats so sick they wanna punch you in the fuckin face. But this ain’t solely bout the beats. Probably what’s best about this album are the moods created. Ambient hiss and ghostly crackle create space and set a haunting tone, as on the opener “Thought 001,” the microtonal “Broken Box,” or “The Look Behind the Eyes.” Much of the album has that claustrophobic feel as if you’re visiting some forgotten alien space colony (think Aliens).
I keep thinking about how a couple years ago the press went crazy over the first Burial album on Hyperdub and how it marked the arrival of dubstep. It was touted such an emotional masterpiece. Then, just last year you got “The Idea is Being Killed by Another Thought” on the self proclaimed "experimental (or whatever) music” label HeilsKabaal. If it were up to me, I’d take the latter over the former. AvoidAudio is harder, darker, and moodier.7/10

Na een aantal cdr- en 3”cdr-uitgaven is AvoidAudio’s The Idea Is Being Killed By Another Thought de eerste échte officiële release van het Groningse label HeilsKabaal. Een label dat zich bezig houdt met ambient, noise, drone en audiocollages en in korte tijd al tientallen eigen beheer-releases heeft uitgebracht. Tijd om terug te kijken naar de eerste release, naar het begin van 2008. Het debuutalbum van AvoidAudio dus, indrukwekkende soundscapes die verrassend uitmonden in drum & bass met een dubrandje.
Vanuit een onwillekeurig klinkende donkere soundscape verandert het geluid langzaam. Eerst met subtiel binnendruppelende elektronica, uitgroeiend tot dansbare IDM. Bij ‘0x512’ is het geluid een wervelende combinatie van drum & bass met opzwepende breakbeats waarin je verdrinkt. Het blijven opzoeken van grenzen waarbij het geluid regelmatig terug duikt in het duistere, je meeneemt naar het onbekende en vooral steeds verrast –met hier en daar zelfs sympathiek vrolijke bliepjes- maakt het tot een ijzersterk geheel.
Dit veertig minuten durende album laat je verdwalen, alles vergeten en weet je beet te pakken om samen op een briljante manier de weg terug te vinden. Opnieuw en opnieuw. Een zeer goed en vooral veelbelovend album.

Hosting two of the most distributed e-magazines of experimental electronic music, Vital Weekly & Earlabs, and being the homeland of legendary label Staalplaat, the Netherlands must be considered as one of the pioneering countries within experimental electronic music and sound art.
HeilsKabaal Records is a newborn Dutch label. The focus of the label is ambient, noise, drone, audio collage and field recordings. On present album compatriot composer AvoidAudio is described as the most pop related yet released by label. If that is so, there will probably not be any albums from the label listed on U.S.'s Billboard Music Charts in the near future.
This very promising debut from AvoidAudio titled "The idea is being killed by another thought" does by no means belong to the conventional style of music. In fact it is quite a task to pigeonhole the album. There are many moments of ambience on the album without any interference of rhythms, giving way to some very nice cinematic expressions based on field recordings, processed concrete sounds and buzzing noise drones while discreet melodies keeps a great sonic texture on the album. There are also plenty of rhythms on the album circulating in-between expressions of IDM and breakbeats of complexity.
But overall the album is about atmospheres and AvoidAudio certainly demonstrates that his ability of creating sonic atmospheres is unquestionable. Very nice debut!

Het gaat de oude kant op met de elektronische muziek in Groningen. Vorige week nog ontvingen we een cd van AvoidAudio en dat verschijnt op HeilsKabaal Records. Een artiest en label uit de stad. Geluidskunstenaar Kasper van Hoek is de man achter HeilsKabaal Records en brengt onder zijn eigen naam ook muziek uit. Hij concentreert zich met het label op IDM, ambient, noise, drones en audio-collage. Geluid voor de liefhebber. Op de website zijn de artiesten zelfs te boeken voor een optreden in je eigen huiskamer.
Na een aantal cd'r te hebben uitgegeven is AvoidAudio met The Idea Is Being Killed By Another Thought de eerste die een volwaardig album op het label uitbrengt. Ergens in een donker gebied van ambient, soundscapes en breaks and beats hoor je tamelijk obscure klanken die tegen alle muzikale regels in gaan. Een geluid dat ik nog niet eerder hoorde in de stad.
Na wat luisteren en rondkijken op internet blijkt er een scene aan het ontstaan te zijn. Zo zullen AvoidAudio, Kasper van Hoek en anderen op 9, 10 en 11 november te zien, horen en te voelen zijn op Audio Office #2. Aan de Steenhouwerskade is dat.
